Discover the historic ruins castle, which was constructed with defended stone walls in the ninth century. Admire the breathtaking sweeping views of the Serra de Sintra mountain.
Description
In addition to being a part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, the Castle of the Moors was designated a National Monument in 1910. It towers over the nearby forest at 412 meters above sea level.
The soaring ramparts of the Moorish fortress from the tenth century stretch over stones the size of small buses covered in moss and across the mountain ranges. The shorter, somewhat off-road route via Rua Marechal Saldanha is the ideal walking route from Sintra-Vila to this location. The 2 km hilly trail is peaceful and worthwhile.
The views of Sintra’s palace-dotted hill and the dazzling Atlantic are stunning once you arrive at the castle. The walkways allow you to take in the distinctive scenery that includes the hills, the Palace of Pena, Sintra town, and its town hall in the foreground. Admire the Atlantic Ocean and the vast plain extending northward in the background.
Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the castle and its surrounding paths.
