Admire one of Sintra’s most exquisite and charming palaces, which combines Indian, Arabic, and Neo-Gothic architectural elements. Discover the lovely castle garden, complete with picturesque walkways, a waterfall, and a dilapidated chapel.
Description
In addition to being a part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, the Castle of the Moors was designated a National Monument in 1910. It towers over the nearby forest at 412 meters above sea level.
The soaring ramparts of the Moorish fortress from the tenth century stretch over stones the size of small buses covered in moss and across the mountain ranges. The shorter, somewhat off-road route via Rua Marechal Saldanha is the ideal walking route from Sintra-Vila to this location. The 2 km hilly trail is peaceful and worthwhile.
The views of Sintra’s palace-dotted hill and the dazzling Atlantic are stunning once you arrive at the castle. The walkways allow you to take in the unique landscape that in the foreground features Sintra town and its town hall, the Palace of Pena and the hills. In the background, admire the extensive plain running northwards and the Atlantic Ocean.
Most travelers spend between 1.5 to 3 hours exploring the sanctuary, viewpoints, and market areas.
